Brief description:

Netlution developed a specific orchestration solution for the annual in-house exhibition of a global company, adapted to the customer’s own private cloud.

Situation:

The client’s technically oriented annual in-house exhibition faces the challenge of offering new and modern content. The customer is looking for a concept and the implementation of classroom training based on a separate VM for each guest at the in-house exhibition.

Customer request:

The aim is a fully automated orchestration solution for the provision of suitable VMs from the private cloud provided by the customer.

Challenges:

A technical solution consists of three different components: The software that needs to be installed on each laptop at the in-house exhibition (the agent), the web browser-enabled orchestration interface to be developed and the use of the API interfaces of the private cloud provided by the customer.

KPIs:

  • Provision of different cloud landscapes, adapted to the course, for the customer’s international in-house exhibitions with more than 5000 visitors each.
  • Up to approx. 1000 VMs used simultaneously to provide the reservable cloud landscapes.
  • Development of an agent for use on over 1500 laptops, which are used in the course of classroom training to communicate with the orchestration solution.
  • Provision of an orchestration interface for the customer’s technical support team.
  • Speed of the solution: Participants should be connected to their cloud landscape within 3 seconds of starting the training.

Netlution solution:

The orchestration software developed in Java uses the APIs of the customer’s private cloud to provide and manage the cloud landscapes required for the in-house exhibition.

A web interface was developed for the customer’s trade fair team to manage and provide an overview of the classroom training courses and the cloud landscapes created for them. At the customer’s request, the implementation was realized with SAP UI5.

An agent developed in Powershell handles communication between the trade fair laptop and the orchestration software.

Project duration:

The project started in 2014 and the global cloud environment was dismantled by Netlution at the end of the operating phase at the end of 2020.

Netlution services:

  • Easy-to-use web interface for orchestration for the customer’s trade fair team.
  • Automatic orchestration is created from the configuration of cloud landscapes, classrooms and training courses to be used.
  • Development and implementation of a technical communication concept to achieve maximum network efficiency and speed.
  • On-site support and troubleshooting at the customer’s annual in-house trade fairs as part of the technical trade fair team.
  • As the project progressed, the connection to public clouds was implemented as an additional requirement (GCP and Azure).
  • Training of employees of the technical trade fair team in preparation for the events.

Results:

With one cloud landscape per participant, training courses can be offered that could not be implemented with the classic split backend variant (landscape per training course), such as destructive user behavior or upgrades of data bases, etc.

  • Provision of cloud landscapes at international events with 5000+ visitors each
  • Up to approx. 1000 VMs used simultaneously
  • Event agent runs on over 1500 laptops
  • With the participant-dedicated cloud landscapes (landscape per participant), training courses can be offered that cannot be implemented with the classic shared backend variant (landscape per training course), such as destructive user behavior or upgrades of data beacons, etc.
